A set of 1:48 masks for sprayed national insignia and markings of the Nakajima Ki-43-II Hayabusa fighter in its late guise. A replacement for decals, with no carrier film and no glossy outline.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa was one of the most widespread Japanese army fighters. Late machines of the II version got a shorter wing with rounded tips, exhausts with a thrust effect and better protection for the pilot. The Allies knew the aircraft under the name Oscar and at first underestimated its agility.
This set does not aim at the cockpit. It carries shapes for the national insignia and other markings that are usually dealt with on a model by a decal. A sprayed marking has no carrier film, so no glossy outline is left on a matte surface and there is no risk of a transparent film catching the light across the engraved panel lines.
The order tends to be the reverse of what modelers expect: on a marking with a light outline the base color goes on first, that is covered by a smaller circle and only then comes the shade of the marking itself. Let the paint set properly between the layers, otherwise the edge of the base tears away when they are lifted.
They pay off most on models with matte or sun-bleached paint, where the sheen of a transparent film would give away a sheet stuck on. They also serve well when you want to break a marking with a scuff or go over it with a band of overpainting, which is hard to do with a decal.
