About product

Light Slate Grey – Mr.Paint Acrylic Paint

A modeling paint, not a kit. The shade comes from the Slovak manufacturer Mr.Paint's acrylic Aqua line. It is therefore water-thinnable — you do not need lacquer thinner or extraction the way you would with lacquer paints. It is applied with airbrush and brush alike, supplied in a dropper bottle, and the manufacturer states a volume of 17 ml.

What the color belongs to

The manufacturer places this shade in the British part of its palette: it is listed alongside Dark Slate Grey, Ocean Grey, Medium Sea Grey, Extra Dark Sea Grey, Sky and Dark Earth — that is, alongside the classic colors of the Royal Air Force. Light Slate Grey is therefore a British shade, a cool gray with a greenish cast, noticeably lighter than its dark counterpart Dark Slate Grey. The manufacturer does not declare a specific scheme or aircraft for it, though, so which subject you use it on is up to you.

Use

  • Airbrush: sprays practically straight from the bottle; for fine nozzles, thin with water or the manufacturer's acrylic thinner.
  • Brush: covers small areas, touch-ups and transitions between camouflage patches well.
  • British camouflage has hard edges — use masking tape or masks, not a soft airbrushed transition.
  • The paint dries to a smooth satin film that takes decals, washes and filters directly.
  • Judge the shade on a test piece: gray-green tones shift noticeably under different light and over different primers.

Do not confuse it with American grays

This shade does not belong with American aviation grays like Haze Grey (FS 36270) or Gunship Grey (FS 36118) — those come from a quite different palette and era. Light Slate Grey is British, and its natural partners are other shades from the British line, chiefly the darker Dark Slate Grey and grays such as Ocean Grey or Medium Sea Grey.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of British aircraft who want a paint from one manufacturer's cohesive British palette, and for those looking for a water-thinnable acrylic usable with both brush and airbrush.

The paint is supplied in a bottle; this is not a kit. Ventilate when spraying and do not inhale the atomized paint. Protect from frost and keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

The manufacturer places it in the British part of its palette, alongside shades like Dark Slate Grey, Ocean Grey or Medium Sea Grey. It has nothing to do with American grays.

Light Slate Grey is a lighter variant of the same type of gray-green shade. Dark Slate Grey is noticeably darker; they can also appear together in a scheme.

With water or Mr.Paint acrylic thinner. It is an acrylic from the Aqua line, not a lacquer paint, so you do not need lacquer thinner.

The manufacturer does not declare a specific type or scheme for this shade, so none is stated here either. Follow your model's instructions or period photographs.
