A sample pack of ThermoArt thermoplastic sheets. The material softens when heated, can be shaped by hand and sets hard once it cools.

ThermoArt is a sheet thermoplastic made for hot forming. After a dip in hot water or a pass with a heat gun it becomes pliable enough to be bent, stretched over a form and shaped by a gloved hand. Once it cools it sets hard and holds its shape. If the result does not come out right, the material can be heated again and reshaped, so a failed attempt does not mean a ruined piece.
This pack is a sample set. It lets you try out how the individual versions behave before you reach for a large-format sheet. With a thermoplastic such a trial makes real sense, because each version takes a different time to heat through and reacts differently to stretching.
The material is mostly used for costumes, where it becomes armor, pauldrons, masks and helmets formed directly on the body or on a plaster cast. In a modeling workshop it serves for vacuum forming clear canopies, for making simple molds and for large organic shapes that would be hard to carve out of solid stock.
The water should be hot, but not boiling. Work in gloves and prepare the form in advance, because the time the sheet stays pliable is counted in tens of seconds. Two heated surfaces can be joined by pressing them together. The surface takes ordinary acrylic paints, although on smooth material an adhesion primer pays off. Do not throw offcuts and scraps away. Thermoplastic can be melted and fused into a new sheet, or used as a filler under a thinner layer where a stressed spot needs reinforcing.
