The scores of the leading German fighter pilots of the Second World War reached hundreds of victories, and the overwhelming majority of their flights fall precisely on the Gustav. These were not special machines, though: an ace flew with ordinary production examples which differed from the others only in their markings. A personal emblem on the fuselage, a colored cowling or propeller tip and victory bars on the rudder are therefore what sets such a model apart from any other.
The system was strictly laid down. A numeral or a sign ahead of the cross on the fuselage determined the position of the machine within its Staffel, the symbols behind the cross the belonging to a unit and its headquarters. The color of the number gave away the flight. Only above this framework did the personal additions appear which pilots had painted on: coats of arms, nicknames, animals. On a model it is therefore sensible to respect the order and not to put the markings together at will.
The package carries two separate sets of parts, so a pair of finished aircraft will come about. At the small 1:144 scale it is advisable to bank on a clean shape and restrained wear, because a heavy deposit of shadows optically fills a small model and erases the detail. The personal emblems, by contrast, are the one thing that deserves sharpness, and it is good to apply them only onto a perfectly smoothed glossy base.
The pair can also be taken as a comparison of two different units. The difference in the color of the numbers and in the placement of the signs stands out most when the machines stand side by side.
The pair will be appreciated by anyone taking on this scale for the first time as well. The first piece serves as a test of the procedure, while the second already comes about with a confidence that would otherwise take several separately bought boxes.
