A 1:24 plastic kit of the American oval-track special Oldsmobile 442 from 1979 in the colors of the A. J. Foyt stable.
Responsibility details are not available.
A. J. Foyt remains the only driver who managed to win the Indianapolis 500, at Daytona, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and at Sebring. He went racing in stock cars alongside his main program with formula specials and started under the banner of his own team. The end of the 1970s meanwhile transformed the whole of American oval racing: the carmakers shrank their bodies, and lighter, shorter coupes changed in one stroke the very way a pack was driven on high-speed tracks.
The Oldsmobile from this season was among the types that held best on the long ovals, because the shape of its tail kept the car stable in the slipstream of its rivals. Under the sheet metal the car was entirely different from the road version: a tubular frame, a live rear axle, a V8 engine without electronics and a cabin with a single seat surrounded by a roll cage. The bodies were still derived from models actually on sale, though, so a spectator in the stands recognized the make of his own car at first glance. The manufacturers built whole advertising campaigns on that, and the rivalry between the makes was as fierce on the ovals as the rivalry between the drivers.
The package is a classic injection-molded kit to be glued and painted, not a finished collector's model. Count on paints, glue and primer not being included. A body of this type paints best once the mold parting lines have been sanded out perfectly, because a deep gloss gives a smooth surface away without mercy.
