About product

The Mustang under the Australian roundel

The designation Mustang Mk.IV was used by the Commonwealth countries for the late single-seat Mustangs with a cut-down rear fuselage and a teardrop canopy – that is, for the machines that in American designation correspond to the P-51D and P-51K series. The Royal Australian Air Force received them at the close of the Second World War, and some of them were built in Australia itself, under license by Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation.

They missed the war, but not Korea

The Australian Mustangs did not manage to take part in the great battles against Japan. All the longer, though, was the service they then put in: they flew with the occupation forces in Japan, and in 1950 the Australian No. 77 Squadron set out with them as one of the first Allied units to Korea. There they served mainly for attacks on ground targets, until jet Meteors took over from them. It is precisely the postwar and Korean finishes that are among the most colorful that can be put on a Mustang.

Why the roundel has no red

The Australian machines carried a roundel without a red center in the Pacific. The red disc in the middle would have been confused at a distance with the Japanese marking, and so in 1942 the Allies dropped the red from it and left only a blue circle with a white ring. Postwar machines kept this form, so look over the decal sheet before applying it and make sure that the variant you have chosen matches the period you are building.

Where the build gets hard

The span of the subject was over eleven meters, so the finished model comes out at just under twenty-four centimeters. Two places decide the result. The first is the bubble canopy: it has to sit without gaps, otherwise the whole spine looks broken. The second is the radiator under the fuselage – its inlet and outlet flaps tend to be molded shut and it is worth separating them and leaving them slightly open. The landing gear legs of the Mustang are slender, so glue them on right at the end.

FAQ

The British and Allied designation Mustang Mk.IV was used for the late single-seat machines of the P-51D and P-51K series, that is for the version with a cut-down rear fuselage.

Yes. They served with the occupation forces in Japan, and the Australian No. 77 Squadron went into action with them in the first year of the Korean War.

Some of the machines really did come from license production at Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation; the rest arrived from American production.

Seating the teardrop canopy without a gap and cleaning out the radiator duct under the fuselage. The landing gear is slender, so glue it on last.
