This set from Artwox Model is made for a model of the British battlecruiser HMS Hood in 1:600 scale. It is not a kit; the covering is laid onto a finished model and its purpose is to replace the smooth surface with a texture matching a real deck. On a hull as long as this it is the most prominent area of the whole model.
The Hood entered service in 1920 and for two decades she was the largest warship in the world. A long slender hull and a speed of over thirty knots made her a representative of the empire, and in the mid-1920s she sailed round the world. Her armor protection, however, stayed at the level of an older concept and that proved fatal: on 24 May 1941 a German salvo hit the ship in the Denmark Strait, the magazines exploded and of a crew numbering over fourteen hundred men three survived.
Let the hull dry completely before laying the covering down; fresh paint would take an impression under pressure. Follow the edges of the covering against the light, so that none of them stands proud. British decks look believable in a grayish beige tone, which can be achieved with a very thin wash. Anyone who wants to go further can suggest the worn spots around the gun turrets as well. A stand and a nameplate will finish the model off to display case form.
