A detail accessory made by ultra-precise 3D printing from resin, not an aircraft model. The set brings a faithful miniature of the Norden M-9 bombsight for the interiors of American Second World War bombers in 1:32 scale. 3D printing can capture even the small optical and mechanical details of the instrument that a plastic casting cannot reach. The part suits the cabins of heavy and medium bombers — typically the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell or B-26 Marauder. The set is made by Art Scale.

The real subject

The Norden was the famous American precision bombsight of the Second World War. This tachometric instrument with its own analog computer worked out the moment of release by itself from speed, altitude and wind, and it was one of the most closely guarded instruments of its day.

Fitting and painting

• Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water — this removes the uncured print resin residue.
• Cut the print supports off with a sharp scalpel; a 3D print is fragile, so never break them off.
• Bond with super glue (cyanoacrylate); plastic cement does not hold on resin.
• Apply a primer, bring out the metal parts with a dark shade and dry-brushing; a wash gives the instrument depth.
