The Pteranodon was not a dinosaur in the strict sense but a pterosaur, a Mesozoic flying reptile with a toothless beak and a conspicuous bony crest running back from the rear of the skull. It is precisely the crest and the wing span that make its form one of the best-known silhouettes of the Mesozoic.
The model matches that in its construction. Whereas on four-legged reptiles the mass is carried by the body, here the most delicate place is the thin wing membrane and its junction with the elongated finger. The parts in these places tend to be subtle, so they are nipped off the sprue carefully and the remainder of the gate is better cut off with a knife than snapped off.
The set belongs to the manufacturer's dinosaur line, which is built on colored plastic and on joints without glue. The build is therefore short and safe even for children's hands, yet nothing stops it being taken as a base for a proper paint job.
It is with prehistoric animals that painting brings the most. Nobody knows the real coloring, so a modeler can choose between a restrained gray-brown treatment and a more pronounced one after today's sea birds. A dry brush accentuates the scaly texture, and a thin glaze around the eyes and the beak gives the head depth.
The span of the finished model is not stated here and the name lacks a scale, so for a display case it is good to count on the width being greater than the height. Anyone who wants a really stable piece can glue a wire support under the belly, set into a wooden board; with pterosaurs that tends to be the only way to hold outspread wings without the whole model resting on its tips.
