A round modeling vise for holding small parts during gluing, sanding and painting.
Responsibility details are not available.
Most of the work on a model takes place on an area smaller than a palm, and almost always a third hand is missing. Holding a part in your fingers means warming the glue, wiping fresh paint and risking a small component slipping away somewhere under the table. The vise solves this problem in the simplest way: it clamps the part and lets you use both hands for what you are actually doing.
The round rendition has a practical advantage over an angular one. It is equally accessible all the way round, so you can reach the clamped part from any side without having to move the whole jig or shift your grip. That is especially useful when painting, where you need to work smoothly round the entire circumference of a component, and also when cleaning up, where the angle of the tool changes literally every moment. The base at the same time keeps the center of gravity low, so the assembly does not tip over when pushed and drag your part-finished work along with it.
It comes into its own with fuselage halves, wheels, fine photo-etch and figures you do not want to pick up. Tighten the jaws only enough for the part to hold: thin-walled plastic moldings stand up to surprisingly little, and excessive pressure deforms them before you have time to notice. With delicate pieces, put a piece of soft material between the jaw and the component, a strip of rubber or folded paper for instance. The manufacturer also makes further jigs from the same family, which can be combined on the bench.
