The GRU-7A ejection seat was developed by Martin-Baker of Britain for the Grumman F-14 carrier fighter. The rocket-boosted design could get the crew to safety even at zero speed and zero altitude, that is straight off the deck of a carrier lying still. The seat carried its own oxygen supply, a life raft and a survival kit, because a machine shot down or damaged could end up hundreds of kilometers from land over the open ocean. The two-man crew sat in tandem and the ejection could be set off from the second man's position as well.
The seat changed over the Tomcat's long service. The later examples differ from the first batches in the arrangement of the control handles, the shape of the back rest, the routing of the hoses and the details of the pyrotechnic elements. It is this late form, common on F-14A and F-14B machines in the last two decades of their service, that the set is aimed at.
This version is supplied without the seat harness, so it is assumed that the modeler will add one to his own taste or reach for the sister version in which the harness is included. The resin castings have to be separated from the casting blocks and the surface leveled. Fitting out the cockpit tends to be easier if the seats are tried in dry before the cockpit tub is painted. Compatibility is stated with the Trumpeter kit in the same scale. Before gluing them in it is worth checking whether the cockpit tub is not needlessly high where they are attached; in a large scale every millimeter tells on the height of the figure's head and on the seating of the canopy.
The body of the seat tends to be dark gray, the padding and the head rest stand apart from it and the rocket pack under the cushion typically has a metallic shade. Drybrushing the edges and a fine dark patina in the grooves bring out an articulation that nobody would otherwise notice on so small an assembly.
