A set of printed harnesses for the British Mk.9 series ejection seat, worked out for the large 1:32 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British firm Martin-Baker supplied its seats to hundreds of types of aircraft, and every series has its own arrangement of straps. The Mk.9 is one of those that carry a full harness over the shoulders as well as a lap belt, supplemented by leg restraints. The combination of wide woven straps, metal buckles and the chest release is highly articulated, and in 1:32 scale it already shows well on a model, so a plastic suggestion from a mold looks hard and flat next to reality.
The set gets around this problem by printing. The weave of the fabric, the stitching and the color distinction of the hardware are done, and what is left to the modeler is to cut out, seat and fine-tune. The large scale moreover allows the individual straps to be worked separately and laid out as they lie on a real seat ready for the pilot to get in.
On an ejection seat the harness does more than hold the pilot in place. It keeps him in a position in which his spine will take the sharp acceleration of the shot, and the leg restraints prevent his limbs from being left in the airstream. That is why there are so many straps and why they are routed through precisely set guides, which is worth respecting on a model.
It pays to finish the seat beforehand including the shading, because the parts seat better on a finished matte surface than on gloss. After the dip the strap is laid on, straightened with a brush and left to dry; only then is the second layer added, with the loose ends thrown over the edge.
The box is aimed at builders of jet aircraft with a British or license-supplied seat, where the cabin is often open and the interior makes up a substantial part of the final impression. The seat itself is not included; this is an accessory for a model in 1:32 scale.
