The eighteen-cylinder Wright R-3350 radial in a version printed from photopolymer, an accessory for models in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone is a radial engine with two rows of nine cylinders and a displacement of almost fifty-five liters. In the power class above two thousand horsepower it was among the best at the close of the Second World War, but its road to usability was thorny. Overheating of the rear row of cylinders and the magnesium crankcase caused a series of fires during testing and during the first combat use, which cost the lives of crews.
Once the design had been sorted out, it became a reliable workhorse. It powered the Lockheed Constellation airliner, the Douglas Skyraider carrier attack machine and the Neptune patrol aircraft. In the turbo-compound version, where three turbines returned the energy of the exhaust gases back to the crankshaft, it passed the mark of three and a half thousand horsepower. In appearance it is easy to remember by the dense ribbing of the heads and the ring of exhaust elbows around its circumference.
This set is made by printing from photopolymer, not by classic casting into a silicone mold. The difference shows exactly on the cylinder heads, where the technology manages to separate even the individual fins and leave gaps between them. The surface may carry very fine traces of the layers; this is a property of the process, removed by a brief rub with the finest paper or by a thin layer of filler primer sprayed from a greater distance. The whole block comes into its own on a model only if the cowling is hinged aside or taken off completely.
