90 mm rounds of the American tank destroyers and tanks of the late Second World War, cast in resin in 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The 90 mm gun grew out of the M1 anti-aircraft gun and, in the form of the M3, it reached first the turret of the M36 Jackson tank destroyer in the fall of 1944 and immediately afterwards the M26 Pershing heavy tank. The round was long and heavy, with a case that a loader could not hand over with one hand. Alongside the ordinary M82 armor-piercing projectile, the last months saw the sub-caliber T30E16 with a tungsten core, issued piece by piece and accounted for by name.
On ammunition of this format everything shows: the knurling of the base, the shoulder of the neck, even the small letters pressed into the metal. Casting in resin carries these microshapes across, because they do not have to be drawn with regard to the parting direction of a metal mold. Resin is also denser than styrene, so the part feels different between the fingers and sits more convincingly in an open stowage.
Casting in an open mold occasionally leaves a small cavity from an air bubble at the edge of the base. It is filled with a drop of super glue and a little filler or with a thin layer of putty, and once dry it is leveled with a sanding sponge. Only then comes the filler primer: without it the sheen of smooth resin shows through even under an opaque color and the metal never looks like metal.
A loader with a round in his arms, empty cases thrown behind the turret or a little pile ready by the rear hatch: the 90 mm round is big enough for the viewer to notice it even from a distance. An interesting contrast arises when you lay a smaller caliber from another set beside it.
For fidelity it helps to mix the polished brass from gold and transparent orange and to leave the tip of the projectile a matte dark shade.
