A set of 76 mm ammunition for American tanks and tank destroyers, cast in a silicone mold. 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The American tank crewman was given the M1 gun of 76 mm caliber in 1944, when it turned out that the short 75 mm gun used until then was not enough against the frontal armor of the German machines. It served in the M18 Hellcat tank destroyer and in the versions of the Sherman with the new turret. What is interesting is that the projectile stayed just as wide as on the older 3-inch gun; what changed was mainly the case, which was shorter and lighter so that more rounds would fit into the hull. The sub-caliber M93 with a tungsten core was handed out piece by piece, and in the units the crews scrounged it from one another.
In resin the mouth of the case can be made so thin-walled that it looks genuinely open. Injection-molded plastic would need considerably thicker material in the same place, otherwise the mold would not fill. A thin wall has its other side, though: it is fragile, so handle the part by its surface and not by the edge.
A longer slender casting is often slightly bowed after it comes out of the mold. A few seconds in hot water softens the material and the part can be straightened between the fingers, and cold water then fixes the shape. Remove the rest of the casting system with a sharp scalpel, cutting away from yourself, and level the surface on abrasive paper laid on glass so that the mating surface stays flat.
The case is neither gold nor yellow. Closest to reality is usually a warm shade obtained by lightly glazing through a smoke tint, rounded out with a dark settling in the groove below the neck. The projectile itself stays matte and noticeably cooler, and on an armor-piercing round it also has a thin color band near the tip.
