About product

A photographic Gustav in castings

The reconnaissance modification Bf 109 G-4/R-3 came from the production fighter and was meant to fly further than the internal tank allowed. Under the fuselage it therefore carried a pylon for an auxiliary fuel tank and photographic equipment in the rear. The G-4 version itself differed from the older G-2 mainly in a different radio set and in larger main landing gear wheels. The cast set carries these elements over into size 1:32 and builds on the plastic moldings of the G-6 version.

The extent of the work on the model

This is among the more demanding modifications. Besides the upper part of the cowling, the sides of the rear fuselage and the seating of the pylon under the fuselage also have to be dealt with, so there is cutting in several places, not just one. A sensible pace is one working session for cutting off and cleaning up, a second for dry trials and a third for gluing and filling. Three to four evenings in all, and on a first attempt easily two weekends. Anyone who builds in stages can work the modification in gradually between other jobs; anyone who wants it finished in one go should set aside a continuous block of time and not do it piecemeal.

Practical notes on the build

Let the castings lie in a warm room for a few hours before the build. A slight bow in thin parts can be carefully straightened by dipping them in hot water and holding them until they cool. Make the cuts with a margin and sand down gradually, because material taken off is hard to put back. The finish of a reconnaissance machine differs from that of a fighter only in details, so the choice of shades stays the usual one for 1943 and you do not have to buy anything out of the ordinary.

FAQ

It carried a pylon for an auxiliary fuel tank under the fuselage and photographic equipment in the rear part for long-range reconnaissance.

Yes. There is cutting in several places on the fuselage, so the risk of inaccuracy grows and there is more filling and sanding.

Dip it in hot water for a while, straighten it with your fingers into the right shape and hold it until the material cools.

Yes, the plastic moldings of the G-6 version. Super glue, putty and a fine saw for separating the casting blocks also come in handy.
