Kajika 1:700 IJN Battlecruiser Hiei 1915 Special Edition is a plastic kit of the Japanese battlecruiser Hiei in her 1915 appearance. The Special Edition is complemented by photo-etched parts, a wooden deck and metal barrels.

An injection-molded plastic kit of the battlecruiser Hiei in 1:700 scale in the Special Edition release. Against the basic version the manufacturer Kajika adds photo-etched parts, a wooden deck and metal barrels to the box, that is, exactly the accessories modelers otherwise buy separately. The model captures the ship in her 1915 configuration, that is, in the period shortly after entering service and long before the later rebuilds.
The Hiei belonged to the Kongo class, four battlecruisers built before the First World War. Typical of these ships were a long slender hull, high speed and a main armament of eight 356 mm guns in four twin turrets. In 1915 the ship still had her original silhouette with three funnels and relatively low superstructures, without the tall stepped tower that ships of this class were given only during their interwar modernization. The early appearance therefore differs from later kits of the same ship in practically everything above the waterline, which makes her an interesting subject even for someone who has already built one of the later versions.
Plan the build so that you paint before the superstructures are closed up and the small parts fitted. The wooden deck is stuck onto a sanded, flat and degreased surface, because every unevenness underneath it will show. Bend the photo-etched parts on a metal strip or in a bender and glue them in spots with cyanoacrylate glue, as cement for plastic will not help here. The metal barrels only need degreasing and slotting in; they hold their shape better than plastic ones and will take careful straightening. Use a base coat on the hull and the superstructures, then the shade according to the chosen scheme, a wash into the recesses and a light accent on the edges. The finished model stands out on a stand or on a base with an imitated water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
