This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:700 captures the Japanese battleship Fuso as she was in 1944, that is in her late configuration after all the rebuilds. The full hull form means the complete hull including the underwater part and a build onto a stand or base, not a waterline cut at the water line. The manufacturer is Aoshima, a Japanese brand that has long specialized in ship models in the 1:700 scale.
Fuso was the first unit of the class of Japanese battleships that bore her name, commissioned in the mid-1910s. In the interwar period she went through two extensive rebuilds, in which she received new machinery, heavier armor protection and above all an exceptionally tall multi-level pagoda-style superstructure, which became the identifying mark of the whole class. The 1944 configuration corresponds to the last period of her service, when the ship had been given a numerous anti-aircraft battery and radar equipment.
The tall superstructure is the key detail on this type: assemble the levels carefully and check that they are vertical, as any asymmetry shows on the finished model. Small gun barrels and boats are more comfortable to paint on the sprue. Spray the hull with an airbrush and deal with the deck separately, with masking. The anti-aircraft positions and the masts come alive once photo-etched railings and rigging of stretched filament are added. Finish with a discreet wash into the superstructures and light edge highlighting with a dry brush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
