A combined package of accessories to a plastic kit. According to the name it contains a self-adhesive veneer deck with the laying of the planks printed on it, a masking template for spraying and a set of photo-etched parts. The ship model itself is not part of it; this is an improvement to a kit that has already been bought.

Preparing the plastic deck

The quality of the bond is decided before you reach for the veneer. Rid the plastic deck of remains of sprue gates, sand it flat and above all degrease it; isopropyl alcohol on a cloth is enough. Residues of mold release agent are reason number one why veneer starts lifting at the corners after a few days. Lay the deck on dry first and check that the cut-outs fit the superstructures; any overhang is easier to level before the film is peeled off than afterwards.

The gluing procedure and the photo-etched parts

Peel the protective film off in sections and lay the veneer from the center toward the edges so that the air has somewhere to be pushed out. Use a new blade for trimming, as a blunt knife does not cut wood but tears the grain. The photo-etched parts in the package call for a different approach: fold them on the edge of a steel rule or in a bending tool, glue them with super glue in a really small amount and go over them with a primer before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth brass surface.
