A plastic kit of the Japanese light cruiser Abukuma in 1:700 scale from Tamiya of Japan. It belongs to the Waterline Series, so the model has the hull only down to the waterline and is set on a base representing the sea. The finished model is roughly 230 mm long. The kit captures the ship in her configuration of late 1941 and offers movable guns and a catapult.
Abukuma was the sixth and last ship of the Nagara class, completed in 1925. She was a light cruiser of around 5170 tons displacement, roughly 162 meters long and 14 meters wide, with a top speed of about 36 knots. Her armament consisted of seven 140 millimeter guns and two quadruple 610 millimeter torpedo mounts. She was the only ship of her class with a double-curved bow, which together with the three funnels and the angular bridge structure is her most conspicuous recognition feature.
The hull is split into a left and a right half - glue both parts carefully and level the lower edge so that the model does not rock on its base. Fill and sand the seam. Fit the superstructures, the funnels and the masts only after the hull has had its base color, and paint the small parts on a stick. Use an airbrush and thin coats for the gray shade; set the decks apart with a darker tone. The details come out with a wash run into the recesses and a careful dry brush on the edges. Finish with a matte coat. Photo-etched railings and rigging from fine thread go with the model beautifully.
