A model of the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga in 1:700 scale, and that in her early guise with three flight decks. According to the name the injection-molded plastic kit from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi is in the Full Hull version, that is, with the whole hull including the underwater part, and is displayed on a stand. It is precisely the early configuration that makes this model an unusual piece among the more common late versions of Japanese carriers.
The Kaga came about by converting a hull originally intended as a battleship and entered service in the second half of the 1920s. In her original guise she had an unusual arrangement with three decks. The main landing deck took up the greater part of the length of the ship, while below it in the forward part were two shorter takeoff decks leading straight out of the hangars. The solution was meant to allow simultaneous takeoff and landing, but in practice it did not prove itself, because the short decks were not enough for more powerful aircraft. In the second half of the 1930s the ship was therefore rebuilt with one continuous deck and an island. In the later guise she served until she was lost at the Battle of Midway in 1942.
The multi-level arrangement of the decks is the main challenge of the build. Build and paint the individual deck levels separately and join them only at the end, because later you will not get between them with either a brush or an airbrush. Use a thin liquid cement for plastic applied into the joint on the tip of a brush. Sand the parting line of the hull wet with fine paper. Fit the long side smoke ducts and the small booms at the end. The model gains markedly from photo-etched railings, which are supplied separately. The particular shades of the Imperial Japanese Navy differed according to the shipyard and the period, so go by the instructions.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
