A set of metal masts intended for models of the three Olympic-class liners, the R.M.S. Titanic, Olympic and Britannic, in 1:700 scale. It is not a ship model but a set of turned parts with which you replace the plastic masts on a finished model. The maker is the Polish brand MASTER, known for turned naval guns and small metal accessories.
On a ship model in 1:700 scale a mast is a long, extremely slender part with a smooth taper toward the top. Injection-molded plastic cannot manage such a shape: the part has to be thicker than scale because of the mold, it carries a mold seam along its length, and it is apt to bend both when it is taken off the sprue and after it has been glued on. A turned metal mast has a smooth taper along its whole length, stays straight and, above all, takes the pull of the rigging: when you tension the lines a plastic mast bows, while a metal one holds.
The order of work is the opposite of plastic: first drill a hole in the deck to match the foot of the mast and only then insert it. Check it is square from the side and from the front before gluing; once it has set, nothing can be straightened. Glue metal with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or epoxy, as ordinary cement for plastic has no effect. For painting, degrease the brass with alcohol and apply a thin coat of primer for metal, otherwise the paint will peel off the smooth surface while you tension the rigging. Add the rigging from thread or stretched line only once the paint has dried, and tension it gradually so that the load is even.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints, rigging and the base ship model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
