An injection-molded plastic kit of the American heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35) in 1:700 scale from Tamiya, part of the Waterline series. The model captures the ship in her late configuration with reinforced anti-aircraft armament. The hull is made up of a right and a left half, the non-skid deck and the anchor chain are finely engraved; the turrets rotate on polyethylene pins and two shipboard floatplanes are included in the package.
USS Indianapolis was an American Portland-class heavy cruiser. She became famous for carrying the components of the first atomic bomb to Tinian at the close of the war, and shortly afterward, at the end of July 1945, she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank within a few minutes. Her loss, accompanied by the many days the survivors spent waiting for rescue, is among the most tragic stories of the naval war in the Pacific.
It is a waterline model built to the waterline and intended for a flat surface. Use liquid cement for plastic and work in subassemblies. Apply a primer before painting and lay the paint down with an airbrush; paint the tiny anti-aircraft armament and the floatplanes while they are still on the sprue. You will appreciate the gray schemes after a fine highlighting of the panels and a discreet naval patina; optional photo-etched railings will complete the whole.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
