About product

Wooden deck 1:700 USS Lexington CV-2 05/1942 (Artwox Model)

An accessory for modelers who are building an American aircraft carrier in 1:700 scale and want real wood instead of painted plastic. The package holds a veneer cutout with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive base. This is not a kit but an aftermarket modification that is glued onto the plastic deck of the basic model. On aircraft carriers it is the most prominent visible area of the whole model, so the difference tells at first sight. The set is intended for the Trumpeter 05716 kit.

The real subject

The USS Lexington was an American aircraft carrier of the Lexington class, which came about by the conversion of a partly built hull of a battlecruiser. She was among the largest carriers of her time and carried an extensive flight deck laid with wood, usual on American carriers of that generation. The designation 05/1942 in the name refers to the configuration of the ship from May 1942, when above all the anti-aircraft armament and the markings of the deck changed.

Gluing tips

The flight deck is large and uniform, so the greatest risk is bubbles and shifting. So lay the veneer on dry first, with the film not taken off, and mark its position against the bow. Then pull the backing film off gradually a few centimeters at a time and press the veneer down from the longitudinal axis toward the edges with a soft cloth or the edge of a ruler. Trim the edges at the elevators and the superstructures with a new sharp blade only after gluing. If you are planning deck markings, apply them only onto an evened out and varnished surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of American aircraft carriers in 1:700 scale
  • Modelers who want a faithful flight deck without laborious painting
  • Collectors whose model is to be displayed in a view from above
  • More experienced modelers used to the precise gluing of large areas

This is an accessory to a ship kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The area of the flight deck on a plastic kit. The hull, the superstructures and the aircraft are not included.

Take the film off in sections and press the veneer down gradually from the longitudinal axis toward the edges. Never glue the whole area down at once.

Yes, but only onto a surface evened out with varnish. On bare wood neither decals nor paint hold well.

It refers to the configuration of the ship from May 1942, which the cut of the cutouts matches. For another version of the hull the deck need not suit.
