An accessory for the Trumpeter 05781 kit, that is, for a model of the battleship USS Tennessee BB-43 as she was in 1941, in 1:700 scale. It is not a kit. The package holds a wooden veneer cut to the shape of the deck, with printed plank laying and a self-adhesive layer on the back, which is glued over the engraved plastic deck of the model.
The pre-printed seams between the planks tempt you to bring them out with a wash or a panel liner. In 1:700 scale, though, the spacing of the planks is so fine that too dark a wash merely dirties the whole area and the pattern merges into uniform gray. If you want to accent the seams, use a heavily thinned shade only slightly darker than the wood itself, apply it to a small stretch and wipe the excess off at once with a cotton bud. Judge the effect only once it is dry and in daylight, as a wet wash always looks stronger than it will end up.
Wooden decks do not become dirty evenly in service; darker areas tend to be around passageways, the feet of superstructures and the places by the deck fittings where there was most walking. A suggestion can be made with a very fine dry brush or with a tiny amount of pigment. The rule is to apply less than you think is needed; it cannot be taken back. Finally seal the area with a weak matte varnish.
