The kit from ACE depicts a heavy artillery gun of 122 mm caliber in the later form, model 1931/37. The model is injection-molded from plastic, it is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and cement for plastic, paints and basic tools are needed to build it. In 1:72 scale it is a rewarding accessory for dioramas, because artillery machines give a scene both scale and action.
The designation A-19 belongs to a Soviet corps gun of 122 mm caliber. The original version from the beginning of the 1930s stood on its own carriage; the later variant model 1931/37 joined the proven barrel with a carriage derived from a heavy howitzer of 152 mm caliber, which produced a simpler weapon that was easier to handle in the field. The gun was intended for fire at long range, that is for destroying targets in depth and for counter-battery fire, and that is why it was moved by a tractor with a separate limber. The same barrel became the basis of the heavy tank gun used on Soviet heavy tanks of the late war period.
With an artillery kit the geometry decides: assemble the frame of the carriage and the trail legs dry on a flat surface, so that the gun finally stands without rocking. Cut the small parts off with a knife, not with nippers. Check the barrel against the light to see whether it is straight, and sand the mold parting line carefully, because the barrel is the most visible place. Paint over a surfacer, spray the base shade with an airbrush and pick out the engraved detail with a dark wash. Dust the wheels and the lower part of the carriage with pigments, and a light smoke patina suits the muzzle. The model looks good on a small base with a crew and with ammunition, which give the scene context.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
