A Dead Design masking set for national insignia without a white outline for models of the Zero in the A6M1, A6M2 and A6M3 versions in 1:72 scale. It matches the form the aircraft carried on a light finish before the dark upper coloring took hold and the insignia needed setting off.
Before Japanese naval fighters moved to dark green upper surfaces, they flew in a light gray-green shade on which the red disc stood out on its own and a white ring would have made no sense. In this form the machines took off from decks for the first strikes in the Pacific and in it they fought over the Philippines and the Dutch East Indies. The clipped wing of the A6M3 came only with the hard fighting for the Solomon Islands, when the limits of the concept showed up in full for the first time.
On a light base the red behaves differently than on green: it shows through less, but every uneven edge is visible. It pays to polish the surface first and rid it of dust, because a single grain under the mask will put a notch in the edge. Build the covering coat from several misted passes, not from one generous one. After lifting, let the insignia rest for a day before you go at it with clear coat or weathering.
