The value of such a tool does not lie in the abrasive, which is consumable, but in the fact that the board itself is flat and will stay flat even after months of work.
The most common mistake while sanding a seam is that the modeler sands with paper held in the fingers. A finger is soft, so it takes most off where it should not, rounds edges and smears the scribed line beside the seam. A rigid board spreads the pressure over the whole surface and takes material off the high points, so the seam disappears and its surroundings stay untouched. The difference shows most on long seams, where hand sanding almost always leaves a wave behind.
For modelers who putty regularly and want a genuinely flat surface after sanding, not merely a smooth one. Anyone who builds mostly small accessories and figures will get more out of shaped blocks and sanding sponges. The color finish serves to tell pieces apart on the bench, so do not read any other meaning into it without confirmation from the manufacturer.
