About product

Arado Ar 199 early version painting masks 1:72 (Peewit)

Pre-cut painting masks in 1:72 scale meant for a model of the Arado Ar 199 in its early form. The set is neither a kit nor part of one; it serves to cover the glazing and to produce crisp frames when spraying. The early version designation in the name matters, because the masks are cut to the shape of the glazing of a particular form, and a separate set is made for the later version. The exact extent of the set is stated on the box.

The real subject

The Arado Ar 199 was a two-seat trainer on a pair of floats, designed for training the crews of floatplanes, that is for practicing takeoffs and landings on water and for navigation training. The fuselage carried a glazed cockpit with the good view a training machine needs. Few examples were built, which makes the real subject an interesting item for a collection of prewar floatplanes.

Use and tips

The accuracy of a mask shows only on the surface it lies on. Before sticking it down, rid the glazing of grease and dust and let it dry completely. Damp or only just tacky paint will not hold a mask and peels away with it on removal. Lay the mask down with tweezers and press the edge home along its whole length with the blunt tip of a toothpick, with particular care at the corners of the frames and at the transition into the fuselage. An unpressed corner is the most common place for paint to run under. Spray in thin coats and from a lower pressure, because a strong stream of air can lift a badly pressed edge. On float machines do not forget that the waterline and the lower surfaces of the floats often differ in shade, so masking is done in more than one step, and between them the paint has to be left to dry properly.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Arado Ar 199 in its early form in 1:72 scale
  • Collectors of prewar floatplanes and training machines
  • Builders who want crisp frame edges without hand work with a brush
  • Modelers who cannot get the frames painted in by hand at a small scale

The package contains masks only. A kit, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Each set is cut to the shape of the glazing of its own form. Go by the form of the kit you have.

It is not. It is a set of painting masks only.

Degrease the part, stick the mask onto completely dry paint, press the edge home along its whole length and spray thin coats at a lower pressure.
