This item is not aimed at the cockpit but at the markings on the airframe. The stencils define the shape of the circular national insignia and of further markings, so you lay them on directly in paint. The advantage tells mainly on large areas: a sprayed insignia has no edge of carrier film, does not take on a gloss on a matte finish and follows every engraved line it runs across.
The Vulcans went through several very different schemes during their service. In the 1960s they wore an all-white reflective finish, to which markings in delicate pastel tones belonged, so that the absorptivity of the surface was not raised needlessly. Later came an upper camouflage in dark tones and with it toned-down markings in lower contrast. Both positions can be managed equally well with stencils, only with a different choice of shades.
You work from the lightest component to the darkest: spray the area of one color first, let it dry, then lay the next piece on and go on. The base must be smooth, ideally polished with a glossy coat, so that paint does not run under into the texture. It pays to lay each coat on lightly and rather to repeat it; with concentric circles that keeps the regularity. Go over the result under a sharp light once you have finished.
