A kit of one of the most unusual machines in aviation history, the circular experimental aircraft Avrocar VZ-9. Given the shape of the subject it is a small model with a few large parts, rewarding to build and to finish. The exact number of parts, the contents of the package and the number of schemes are given in the instructions enclosed with the kit.
The Avrocar was created at the end of the 1950s at the Canadian works of Avro as an attempt at a vertical take-off machine of circular plan. In the middle of the disc sat a large turbine whose exhaust gases were led around the rim and were to lift the machine and drive it forward. Testing showed that the aircraft flew stably only in what is known as ground effect, that is very low above the terrain; when it tried to climb higher, the machine began to oscillate. Two prototypes were built, the program was stopped in the early 1960s and one of the machines has survived in a museum collection.
Before you start gluing, fit the main parts dry and check how they meet around the rim of the disc, because with a circular shape every deviation shows in a seam that runs across the whole model. Glue the joints with a thin glue for plastic, which flows in by capillary action and leaves the surface clean. Fill any gaps and sand them down all the way around so that the shape stays smooth. The metal look of the subject will come out after a smooth base coat is sprayed on, because any unevenness would show on a glossy surface. Apply the decals over a gloss varnish compatible with the paint used, and finally unify the surface with a matte or semi-matte varnish.
