The second sheet of a two-part line from the British brand Xtradecal with markings for the two-seat training versions of the Lightning fighter in 1:72 scale. The two sheets complement one another in content, and each covers different machines. It is not a kit but a printed sheet of decals meant for a finished painted model. The extent of the markings and the particular machines are given on the packaging and in the instructions supplied.
The Lightning trainers came about by widening the forward fuselage so that two pilots sat side by side. They kept the performance and the powerplant of the single-seat versions, that is the pair of turbojets placed one above the other in the fuselage. They were used for both basic and continuation training on the type and stayed in service throughout the operation of the single-seat machines. The wider nose and the different shape of the canopy mean a different layout of the lettering and the national insignia from the single-seat versions.
The Lightning has a broken surface with pronounced panel joints and rows of rivets, over which a decal has to settle without bubbles. A decal softener helps, but use it judiciously: it is laid on with a brush onto a decal that is already settled and then left alone. The film wrinkles briefly and then tightens and clings to the surface by itself as it dries. Any intervention at that moment, whether with a brush or a finger, will damage the decal irretrievably. Try a stronger softener out on an offcut of the sheet beforehand, because thin films react to it very readily.
The package contains the decal sheet only. The model, paints and softener are not part of it.
