A set of masks for the landing gear bays of a P-39Q Airacobra model in 1:72 scale. It does not mask the cockpit or the markings: it covers the inside of the bays at the moment the outer color of the airframe is sprayed. The inside of a bay tends to be a different shade, and without a mask the top color oversprays it without mercy.
The Bell P-39 Airacobra was a fighter with an unusual layout: the engine sat behind the pilot in the middle of the fuselage and the drive shaft ran forward under the cockpit to the propeller. Entry to the cockpit was not through a sliding canopy but through car-type doors. For masking, though, something else matters: the Airacobra had nosewheel landing gear, so besides the two wing bays it also has a bay in the nose. That is one more place where the painting can be spoiled.
First spray the inside of the bays and let the paint cure thoroughly. Then insert the masks, press them down with a toothpick at the edges and only after that spray the airframe. Guide the airbrush perpendicular to the surface; when it is sprayed at an angle, the paint gets under the edge of the mask even where the mask is holding well. In 1:72 scale the bays are small and deep, so bent-tip tweezers pay off. Take the masks out soon after the paint has dried, so that they do not carry the paint with them.
