This photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard adds fine metal detail to a plastic kit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2/F-4 in 1:72 scale. It is not an aircraft model but an accessory that replaces and sharpens selected plastic parts of the kit. Sets of this kind usually cover interior as well as exterior features, such as the instrument panel, the seat belts, levers and small covers, etched into thin metal of a kind that injected plastic cannot capture in a small scale.
The Messerschmitt Bf 109F, nicknamed Friedrich, was the aerodynamically cleanest version of the German fighter from the early part of the Second World War. Rounded wingtips, a revised cowling and smoother contours improved its flying qualities. The F-2 and F-4 versions differed mainly in the engine-mounted cannon firing through the propeller hub; the F-4 received the larger-caliber weapon.
The photo-etched parts are cut from the fret, bent along the pre-scored lines and bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate); on larger areas a two-part epoxy helps. Tweezers, a photo-etch bending tool and patience are called for, as the set is meant for more experienced modelers.
This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
