About product

Aires 1:72 Bf 109G-6 control surfaces

This set of resin castings from the Czech manufacturer Aires replaces the control surfaces of a plastic kit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 in 1:72 scale. In kits the rudder and the flaps tend to be molded in one piece with the wing or with the tail surfaces, so they cannot be deflected; the resin replacement is separate, has the ribbing and the fabric covering rendered and can be glued in any position. A model standing with its surfaces deflected looks far more alive than a model with everything set at zero. The set is not an aircraft kit but an accessory for a model you already have.

The real subject

The Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 was the most numerously produced version of the German single-engine fighter. It was powered by an inverted V12 Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine and differed from the earlier machines mainly in two large-caliber machine guns ahead of the cockpit, whose breeches forced the characteristic blisters on the upper surface of the nose. The rudder and the elevators of the Bf 109 were fabric-covered, whereas the ailerons had a metal skin, so the surface of the individual control surfaces differs noticeably. It is precisely that difference that injection-molded plastic captures only with difficulty in 1:72 scale.

Building and painting tips

Cut the original surfaces out of the plastic with a sharp knife or a thin saw along the engraved dividing line, level the cut with a file and polish the surface. Wash the resin parts in advance, remove the casting blocks and glue them with super glue. Choose the deflection sparingly and above all logically: if you deflect the ailerons, the rudder should match. Flaps lowered fully belong to a machine standing after landing, not to a model ready for takeoff. After spraying, accentuate the fabric surfaces only very lightly with a dark wash along the ribs, as exaggerated contrast looks unconvincing in a small scale.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Bf 109G-6 in 1:72 scale who want deflected control surfaces
  • Modelers bothered by surfaces molded flat in the kit
  • Those who want the fabric covering of the control surfaces rendered
  • More experienced builders used to cutting plastic and gluing resin

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is an accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Sets of this type usually cover the rudder, the elevators and the flaps; check the contents on the packaging.

Yes. The original surfaces have to be cut out of the plastic along the engraved dividing line and the cut leveled. Without that step you cannot fit the resin replacement.

Rather not. It combines cutting into finished parts, gluing resin with super glue and work in a small scale, so it is intended for modelers with practice.
