This set of markings from Star Decals rounds out models of the American self-propelled guns M108 and M109 from the time of the war in Vietnam. It is not a kit but an addition for a vehicle you already have built or are only about to obtain. The markings are prepared directly for the small scale, in which artillery vehicles are collected in whole batteries rather than one at a time.
The M108 carried a 105mm howitzer; the M109 was given a stronger weapon of 155mm. The American army built both vehicles on a related aluminum hull with tracked running gear and a large rotating turret, so they differ from each other mainly in the gun and in details of the superstructure. In Vietnam they made up the core of the fire support bases, from which the gunners supported the infantry even where towed hardware could not get. Crews added lettering of their own to the barrels and sides, so two otherwise identical vehicles looked different every time.
The area under a decal should be smooth and glossy, otherwise a matte silvery edge of the film will appear at the margins. Once it is seated, a softener helps, as it draws the markings down into the rivets and cast gaps. Finally a matte coat evens everything out, and only after that should you set about the dust and mud deposits the vehicles in Southeast Asia were covered in.
