A figure set from the Polish brand Mirage Hobby capturing the crew of a British armored car in the winter period of 1944 and 1945. The period is precisely stated in the name, and on figures that is no trifle: winter clothing changes the silhouette of a figure so much that the same figures would not work in a summer scene.
British armored cars carried out mainly reconnaissance duties at the end of the war. They moved ahead of the main forces, reported contact and pulled back again. The crews were small in number, they worked on their own and they were outside the vehicle more often than tank crews. The winter of 1944 and 1945 in northwestern Europe added low temperatures and muddy roads to that.
A winter scene rests on a muted palette, so the main work lies in handling the shades of khaki and brown so that they do not merge. A slightly lighter top layer of clothing against a darker lower part and clearly distinguished headgear help. There is no stinting on mud on the boots and the hem of the coat, but watch out for snow: in 1:72 scale it looks believable only in a thin layer, not as a continuous white mass. Remains of slushy earth at the edges of the base then join the whole scene into one.
