About product

Challenger 1 Mk.3, 1:72, Academy

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Challenger 1 main battle tank in the Mk.3 version in 1:72 scale from Academy. Even in the smaller scale the kit offers a finely shaped turret, accurately rendered armament and hatches that can be built open or closed; according to the manufacturer it uses link-and-length tracks. The box holds decals for several marking options. The exact number of parts is not stated here; check it against the manufacturer's information for this item.

The real subject

The Challenger 1 was a British main battle tank taken into service in the 1980s and used until roughly the start of the 21st century. It carried a rifled 120 mm gun and was distinguished by heavy composite armor. The Mk.3 version received improved protection and a modernized fire control system. Challenger 1 tanks proved themselves in 1991 during the Gulf War operations, where in desert conditions they showed both durability and effectiveness at long range; later they also served on missions in the Balkans.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts from the sprues and glue them with thin plastic cement; in the small scale take care to clean up the tiny parts and to seat the tracks carefully. Paint the running gear and the lower hull before the hull is finished. Lay down a primer and airbrush the colors; a desert sand scheme suits the Gulf War machines. Bring out the panel lines with a wash and add light dust pigments to the running gear and the lower hull.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British Cold War armor
  • Anyone interested in the operations in the Persian Gulf
  • Modelers who appreciate the small 1:72 scale
  • Beginners and experienced modelers with an interest in modern tanks

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
