A set of figures in 1:72 scale from the maker Red Box. The designation medium refers to the place of the set in a trio that the maker divides by degree of protection, between light and heavy cavalry. For a scene that is practical: medium cavalry joins mobility with a more pronounced share of metal areas, so it can be used as a transition between the two outer sets of the line.
Mounted detachments in the territory of China in the period of the 16th to the 17th century, placed between light and fully protected cavalry. The protection of the rider was partial, combined from metal and non-metal elements; the horse retained greater freedom of movement than in the heaviest formations.
With mounted sets in 1:72 the greatest part of the area is carried by the horse, not the rider, and that is precisely where it is decided whether a group will look alive. The shades of the coat are the simplest tool of variety: a few base tones from dark to light, complemented by a different color of the mane and the tail, turn even figures with an identical silhouette into different horses. Work from a darker base toward lighter transitions on the back and the flanks, and leave a darker tone in the areas under the belly and in the bends of the legs; at a small scale this simple procedure replaces a detailed drawing of the coat, which does not read anyway. Keep the harness and the saddle in a narrow palette so that they stay readable against the coat. Paint the rider's protective elements last; a metallic paint is harder to overspray and easily dirties the surrounding areas.
