This set from the Czech maker CMK is a scenic accessory. According to the name it contains four pieces of a concrete anti-tank barrier in 1:72 scale. The castings are used on their own as an obstacle at the edge of a road and in whole rows, with which the area of a diorama can be divided up and the scene given direction. For a small scale they are especially rewarding, because even a few pieces can create the readable story of a defensive line on a small base.
Anti-tank hedgehogs belonged among the most widespread static obstacles of the Second World War. The better known steel variant was welded or riveted from rolled sections and could be carried. The concrete equivalent did the same job by other means: it was heavy, could be cast close to the place it was used and could not easily be towed away. The barriers were placed on beaches and on the approaches to them, on roads, by bridges, in city streets and in front of defensive lines. Their purpose was not to destroy a vehicle but to stop it or steer it into places that were already covered by fire.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting remains off and even the surface out. Concrete does its best work when it is not left in a single color: a base in light gray, uneven patches of warmer and cooler grays over it, then a weak wash into the grooves and finally pigments according to the setting, with light dust on a road, darker mud by water and greenish traces of moss on the shaded side. Work the bottom of the part into the base with a little putty, so that the barrier does not look as though it were merely standing on the grass.
This is an accessory set, not a kit of a model. It is supplied unpainted, without a base and without paints.
