The set from Metallic Details is an accessory for a plastic model of the B-24D bomber in 1:72 scale. According to the name it contains the engine cowlings together with the Pratt and Whitney R-1830 radial engines, that is exactly the part of the airplane that injection molds usually simplify the most. The set does not replace the kit itself.
The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was a four-engined heavy bomber with long range, recognizable by its slender high aspect ratio wing and by its tall fuselage with a spacious bomb bay. The B-24D version was the first variant produced in large numbers. It was powered by four air-cooled R-1830 Twin Wasp radial engines with turbochargers, housed in characteristic cowlings of oval cross-section, and it is exactly that unusual shape of cowling with side inlets for the oil cooling that is one of the recognition features of the type and worth having right on a model.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, level the area with abrasive paper wet and protect your airways. Before gluing, try seating the part dry in the nacelle and if necessary adjust the recess in the kit. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) and painted over a surfacer. Paint the cylinders of the engine in a metallic shade, pick out the spaces between the fins with a dark wash and run a dry brush over the edges. The inside of the cowling tends to be lighter than its outside, and the opening and the area around the exhaust take a smoke weathering.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
