Black Dog places this item among its diorama bases in 1:72 scale. According to the name, the dominant feature of the display is a destroyed tank destroyer, around which the builder puts the rest of the action together. What you get is the shaped base of a scene, not a kit of a fighting machine with moving parts.
The wreck works as the center of gravity of the composition, and the surroundings therefore hold back. It has proved itself to leave clear access from one side, so that the viewer so to speak steps into the display, and to add only a few items: scattered equipment, a few tufts of weeds, a track mark in the soil. A figure placed further from the wreck will increase the perceived depth of the baseplate.
Start with a filler over the whole area, which evens the surface out and reveals any bubbles. A dark base follows, because a damaged machine never returns to factory cleanliness. Mix the rust from two or three tones; orange on its own looks toylike. Apply the dust with pigment near the ground and take it off toward the top, so that the display does not act uniformly dusty.
The base comes unpainted; the final impression will be created only by your palette and your patina.
