A civilian figure set in 1:72 scale with a dinner at Grandma's scene belongs among the maker's non-combat subjects. It suits a quiet scene in the country.

Most small-scale figures depict soldiers. This item goes the other way: the subject is a family scene at a table, that is an ordinary moment at home. Sets like this tend to be the strongest in a diorama, because they bring an everydayness into the setting that hardware never pretends to.
A farmyard, a doorstep, a dining corner in an open house or a garden table under a tree all suggest themselves. The scene need have no tie to a military subject at all and it works on its own as a small cabinet study. Anyone building a rural scene from the first half of the twentieth century will appreciate that the figures are not in uniform.
With a civilian subject the coloring has far more freedom than with military figures, but that is exactly why it easily slides into gaudiness. Keep to two or three basic tones of clothing and build the rest on their shades. Set wood, textile and crockery apart by sheen rather than by color: a matte surface of clothes against a slightly glossy plate will do more for the impression than another color on the palette.
The figures arrive uncleaned and unpainted. The furniture, the table and the surrounding setting are obtained by the builder, and that is exactly the charm of such a study.
