A set of masks for spraying the national insignia of the American F-107 prototype in 1:72 scale, prepared for the Trumpeter kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F-107 was an American prototype that came about by developing the F-100 Super Sabre fighter and competed for the role of a fighter-bomber. At first glance you will recognize it by the unusually placed air intake above the cockpit, right behind the pilot's head; this arrangement did not catch on with production aircraft. Only three examples were built, the machine did not reach the inventory and it did not succeed in the competition. That is precisely why it is a rewarding subject: on the shelf stands something most visitors will not recognize, and yet it is clearly related to the well known Sabre.
A set of masks in 1:72 scale lets the insignia be sprayed instead of applying decals. It defines the area, the paint is laid on with an airbrush and once the mask is lifted the insignia stays directly in the finish, with no carrier film and with no edge that would reflect on a glossy surface. That is useful especially on a prototype that wore a predominantly bare metal surface.
The finish under a mask must be perfectly matured, otherwise it will peel away with it during removal. Clean the area of dust and grease, seat the mask with tweezers and press the edges down with a toothpick. Spray square to the surface and in thin coats so that paint does not run under an edge. On a metal surface, count on a smooth glossy base holding a mask worse than a matte one, so do not press it down by force and lift it off soon after the paint has dried.
For modelers who build American equipment of the 1950s in 1:72 scale and want the insignia sprayed. The kit, paints and thinner are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
