An accessory that replaces the plastic engine tailpipes on an F-14 Tomcat model in 1:72 scale with separate resin parts with the petals in the closed position. The set by Rise144models is cut for the F-14 model by Academy and matches aircraft with General Electric engines. The manufacturer also carries a version with the nozzle open separately.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was a carrier fighter with a variable-geometry wing. The first production version, the F-14A, flew with the original powerplant, which turned out to be the weak point of the type, and the later F-14B and F-14D versions therefore received General Electric engines of the F110 series. The change is clearly apparent from the outside: the nozzles have a different length and a different build of the outer petals, and with either engine they are very exposed on a model, because the rear of the Tomcat's fuselage is wide and flat. That is precisely why replacing the nozzles ranks among the most common modifications to this type. The petals of a nozzle open and close according to the engine setting, so both positions are common on real aircraft.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks away with a fine saw and level the surface with sandpaper with your airways protected. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Start the painting with a metallic shade in the duct, add dark toning and create fine bands of heat discoloration on the outer petals; on the Tomcat this area tends to be markedly soiled, so dry pigments and fine soot help. Paint both nozzles together and by the same method so that they match in tone, and fit them to the fuselage only at the end.
