This Black Dog set aims at the forward part of the Hornet, where a radar hides under the fairing with the gun armament right above it. An opened nose is one of the most rewarding ways to bring a model to life without building the whole cockpit again. The package adds to a kit; it does not stand in for one.
The F/A-18 Hornet is a carrier-based multirole aircraft that replaced several older types at once: it handles fighter tasks and strikes against ground targets alike. Sturdy landing gear and an arrestor hook reckon with operations from an aircraft carrier, and the pair of engines gives the machine a reserve even with a full load of external stores. The radar in the nose is built so that it can be pulled out and serviced on deck, which a model with the fairing open shows off nicely.
Finish and spray the inside of the nose before you cover it up, because once the fuselage is glued you will not get inside. Attach the radar fairing last, so that you keep the choice between the closed and the open state. Choose the colors with contrast: a lighter base inside and a darker flowing shade in the recesses will do the work for you. Pick out the muzzle with graphite or a dark pigment applied dry.
The parts come unpainted and fitting them calls for the order of the build to be planned in advance.
