The F-4 Phantom II was an American twin-engine two-seat fighter originally designed for carrier service with the Navy, from where it spread to the Air Force and the Marine Corps as well. Over five thousand were built and it served with a number of allied countries for decades afterward. Because it was a heavy machine stressed for carrier operations as well, it was given massive main wheels, so bulky on some versions that they forced bulged covers over the landing gear bays in the wing. The type of wheel and rim changed during production, so the early and the later types are not interchangeable.
