About product

Vought F4U-4 Corsair 1:72 — plastic kit by Hobby Boss

An injection-molded plastic kit of the late form of the American Vought F4U-4 Corsair carrier fighter in 1:72 scale from Hobby Boss. The model belongs to the range of simplified easy assembly kits with a lower parts count, but it carries the features of the late version: a four-blade propeller and a revised engine cowling with a lower air intake. The exact contents of the box and the marking schemes are given in the enclosed instructions.

The real subject

The F4U-4 was the highest-performing production version of the Corsair at the end of the Second World War. It received a more powerful Pratt and Whitney R-2800 series engine with water-methanol injection of around 2400 horsepower and a new four-blade propeller, which markedly raised both speed and rate of climb. Its recognition features are the air intake under the nose of the engine and a reworked cockpit. It saw only marginal combat in the Second World War, but it served all the more intensively later, above all in the Korean War as an outstanding ground attack aircraft.

Building and painting tips

Paint the cockpit before you close up the fuselage and clean the parts of their sprue stubs. Apply a primer to the plastic. Late Corsairs generally wore an overall dark blue naval finish, which is easily brought to life with a light lightening of the centers of the panels and restrained weathering. Glue the four-blade propeller and the landing gear carefully and add them only after the base painting. Bring out the engraved detail with a wash and apply the decals over a gloss clear coat. Worn paint at the wing root and exhaust streaks will give the machine an in-service look.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of American naval aviation and late piston fighters.
  • For beginners who will appreciate a quick build with a lower parts count.
  • For collectors of Corsair versions who want the most powerful production form.
  • As a rewarding subject for an overall dark blue naval finish.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
