The real subject

The F6F Hellcat was a rugged US Navy carrier fighter of the Second World War that became one of the chief conquerors of Japanese aviation in the Pacific. The F6F-5N version was a night fighter fitted with radar in an aerodynamic pod on the right wing and adapted for intercepts at night and in poor visibility. Hellcats stood out for their toughness, a powerful radial engine and easy handling, which made them suitable even for less experienced pilots.

Building and painting tips

Use thin cement for plastic and bond the color photo-etched parts with super glue. Finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage; the color photo-etch raises the detail of the instrument panel considerably here. Apply a primer before painting and lay the paints down with an airbrush; the enclosed masks make clean canopy glazing easy. Night machines in an overall dark blue finish come alive with subtle panel line emphasis and restrained weathering.
