The motif is the entrance to an industrial site, that is a place where a masonry facade meets an entry area and where a display has a natural action. An industrial setting is among the most rewarding subjects for a diorama, because it will take hardware and a civilian scene alike and at the same time calls for no extensive area.
The entrance works as a frame: a model placed into the opening is immediately set into the action and the viewer imagines what is behind it. It will serve just as well as the rear wall of a scene, in front of which the main events take place. In a small scale the buildings moreover help hide the edge of the base, so that the diorama does not end in a sharp cut into empty space.
Industry means dirt, but in measure. With brick masonry it has proved itself to work from a darker ground toward lighter faces; the gates and the metal parts will take a brown-orange corrosion concentrated toward the lower corners and the hinges. Keep the soot only where it would really arise, that is above openings and under the eaves. Dust in the lower third of the walls and in the corners will do more than soiling over the whole area, which only turns a display gray. The gates and the door frames deserve a different surface than the wall, or the whole entrance will merge into one mass. It is enough to shift their shade a little toward the cool and to add a few rubbing marks where a hand or a knock would really have rubbed the paint off.
